How does the JSON Formatter work?

Your payload is validated with `JSON.parse`. If a syntax error exists, the process halts and returns the precise message so no invalid structure slips through.

When the data is valid, it is re-stringified using the indentation you selected. If key sorting is enabled, objects are traversed recursively and rewritten alphabetically for stable diffs.

Does key sorting only apply to the root object?

No. When sorting is enabled, every nested object is reordered alphabetically. Arrays retain their original order to protect data meaning.

What happens if I choose a tab indent?

`JSON.stringify` outputs literal tab characters. That matches teams who indent with tabs but may produce wider Git diffs, so pick the style that fits your repository.
